Animal Turn-In
Provide for the turn-in of unwanted and stray animals; animals are examined, fed and kenneled for a minimum of 3 days, not including the day of impoundment.  The animals are returned to their owner, adopted, transferred, treated or euthanized, depending on their health and disposition.  Dead animals are also accepted and properly disposed of.

Quarantine of Animals
Quarantine animals who were involved in a bite (i.e., bitten by a species known to carry rabies and/or a severe animal bite); animals are quarantined at the shelter if their home property is not secure and/or if the owner requests that the animal be quarantined at the shelter relating to the severity of the bite or the location of the wound; animals are held in quarantine for 6 days to 6 months, with an average of 10 days.  Animals may be quarantined up to 6 months, usual quarantine is 10 days.

Impounded Animals
All animals picked up by Animal Control Officers and brought in by constituents are held for a minimum of 4 days in order to give appropriate time for the owner to locate their animal.   If the animal has a collar with address, license or phone number or microchip, every effort is made to notify the owner. When animal owner information is known, the animal is held for a minimum of 10 days to give ample time for owner pick up.

Animal Cruelty Task Force
The task force  addresses common issues such as; problems with adequate prosecution of animal cruelty cases, basic sentencing guidelines, cockfighting, hoarder situations, circuses, pet shops, border puppy smuggling and other ongoing issues.

Riverside Emergency Animal Rescue System (R.E.A.R.S.)
R.E.A.R.S. is a system developed to perform animal rescue, evacuations, sheltering, care and welfare of domestic and livestock animals within the county during times of disaster or extraordinary emergencies.

Vaccinations and Microchip Service
Veterinary staff administer vaccinations to animals at owner’s request.
Dog - Rabies, Parvo, Distemper, Bordatella.
Cat – Panleucopenia and microchips.

Low Cost Spay/Neuter Program
Low cost spay and neuter surgeries for dogs and cats are offered to County of Riverside residents.  Periodic free spay/neuter surgeries are offered throughout the year as funds are available.

Rabies Clinics
Rabies clinics are held one Saturday each month at the Riverside Shelter.  License Inspectors are on hand to sell dog licenses for area residents. 

In addition, general immunization clinics are conducted at the Riverside Shelter weekly throughout the year.  Additional clinics are held throughout the county.

7-Day PetSmart Cat Adoption
A DAS collaboration with PetSmart. Cats remain at the store 24 hr a day/7 days a week until adopted.

Volunteer Program - Adult
Volunteers over the age of 16 can help at our shelters, during special events or at outreach activities.  Some volunteer jobs include helping with adoptions, grooming, socializing shelter animals. Almost any skill can be helpful to help us help the animals.

Animal Foster Care Program (AFCP)
Community members participate in the treatment and nurturing of ill, injured, under-aged, and behavior-challenged animals by taking them into their homes and implementing specific treatment regimens overseen by DAS.  Food, litter, medications and other pet needs are provided by the department.
